What risk is there in keeping it for 10-11 hours versus 4 hours?” A: “To put it mildly, a lot of different things are going to happen clinically to that organ. Number one is blood. If you have blood going through very, very small tubing, that is not healthy in the long term. Our own blood vessels are slightly elastic in that they kind of move a little bit. These plastic tubes, which these PRVCs have to move through are more rigid. Because of that, blood, these red blood cells lyse and cause hemolysis and not carry enough oxygen to the organ itself. So, that’s a very real thing that happens with these organ care systems. That’s number one. Then, there is the performance of the liver itself. I talked about transaminase being high. These enzymes will leak out of the liver if it’s sick, and this is a very traumatic thing for a liver to go through. So, it will periodically increase its own transaminase levels and it will show you that it’s not performing well. Similarly, with another biomarker called lactate, that will also increase. All of these are essentially early markers of liver failure...transaminase and lactase are going to start increasing at a very high rate if the liver is on for an extended period of time.” – Medical director at OrganOx",
