      "text": "A top TransMedics user at a high-volume West Coast academic center chuckled and demurred when we asked if the pump has any benefit on marginal organs, and then proceeded to share how they’re nonetheless “pushing the limits – using organs that no one else would have otherwise used and had not been used before” – such as geriatric donors, organs left on the device “for more than 24 hours,” and “DCD’s that have really extended warm times,” reckless practices that damage the organ and which reputable centers refuse to engage in. Similar to every high-volume TransMedics user we interviewed, the center’s utilization of the device is driven entirely by organs that are rejects: “we’ve done a lot of livers that other people were not willing to consider, and that’s how we’ve been able to power our program forward.”",
