Our opinion is supported both by our review of WFG documents, as well as our field research, which involved having someone participate in the recruitment process. Several official WFG documents we reviewed seem to encourage agents to utilize subliminal messaging when speaking with potential recruits or clients. We believe WFG materials also encourage recruiters to involve spouses and identify and push “hot button” issues in their recruiting and sales strategies. WFG recruits make significant investments of time and money in short periods by being subjecting to its “3-3-30” and “7-Day Standard” programming. We believe this rapid investment of time and money may persuade agents to stay with WFG longer than they otherwise would through the sunk cost fallacy.",

Agents can’t advance through and graduate Elite Circle without maintaining a specific level of points, which we believe puts tremendous pressure on agents to perform. Agents not able to make their recruiting/sales goal can make up for it with certain bonus categories, which often includes signing themselves and their spouse up for WFG’s pricey annual convention in Las Vegas. At least one Elite Circle organization we identified uses questionable symbols in their programming which may potentially harm Aegon’s reputation.",

      "text": "Once recruits reach a certain level within WFG’s hierarchy, they are introduced into their upline’s Elite Circle. The Elite Circle acts as a barrier to advancement; the only way to advance beyond Elite Circle is to adhere to its strict code of conduct. We believe Elite Circle organizations take WFG’s emotionally persuasive tactics to another level. Many Elite Circle policies associated with WFG border on rules one would expect from a cult-like or military organization, not a publicly traded multi-billion financial services company. Elite Circle agents are subjected to conformist dress codes, are taught never to disrespect their uplines, are expected to show enthusiasm via compulsory standing ovations and are subjected to a strict code of silence regarding Elite Circle activities. To advance through Elite Circle, agents must attend several required “classes” each with their own sets of homework assignments, which give agents points as completed. Often, homework assignments include registering for upcoming classes/workshops held by WFG senior leaders, which often carry a fee to be paid out of pocket. Agents must complete Elite Circle with a specific number of points, or they will not be able to graduate or advance any further within their WFG organization.",
