Less developed regions comprise all regions of Asia (except Japan), Latin America and the Caribbean plus Melanesia, Micronesia, Polynesia, and African countries. The latter are largely excluded in our diagram as we separated the least developed regions from the less developed. The group of least developed countries (LDCs) includes 47 countries: 32 in Sub-Saharan Africa, 2 in Northern Africa and Western Asia, 4 in Central and Southern Asia, 4 in Eastern and South-Eastern Asia, 1 in Latin America and the Caribbean, 4 in Oceania. According to the UN LDCs are those countries that are deemed highly disadvantaged in their development process, for structural, historical and also geographical reasons.
