      "text": "Although the company that is now Saudi Aramco was founded in 1933, for years the region produced primarily oil, but not a full suite of petrochemicals or polymers. It was not until 1977 that SABIC was founded. The first SABIC annual report shows ~50 engineers, a site plan for Jubail and ambitions for polyethylene and styrene production, as well as several base petrochemicals and intermediates. By 2019, SABIC had polyethylene production volume of 8,100 kmt. This development of the Middle East as a downstream producer was enabled by low cost feedstocks, such as ethylene. The Middle East now serves as a major exporter of polyethylene to the world, accounting for 38% of global HDPE exports in 2020.",
